My heart is breaking deeply and slowly as I engage with my brothers and sisters of the faith. We are abundantly preoccupied with identifying the missteps of one another that unity feels like a deceitful hidden agenda. I find myself silently screaming in the middle of it all as I try to manage my distress. I am desperately seeking answers to questions I am afraid to ask. I don’t want to keep discussing what’s wrong with the church. However, here I am, this very post is a contradiction to that sentiment as I share my heart. I hope that what I write will be the difference between division and unity. Please, brothers and sisters, hear my heart as it bleeds the plea of unity, love, and connection. I know we won’t all agree. I know we all have our own religion. I know we all have our own convictions. I know we all have our own upbringing. I know we all have our own way of walking in salvation. I know we have our own, but we can agree on this one thing: JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!
We may not all exegete the scriptures the same, but we have this one thing in common. If we can get back to that fundamental truth and not let the way we respond to problems divide us; we can represent that very truth. Our conversations don’t have to end because we disagree. We bring the complexities and layers of who we are to every discussion, and this will make us very different. However, we do not have to be divided. We are accusing one another of 2 Timothy chapters 3 & 4 where the warning about the last days is given. We don’t need to do that. We need to reflect on 1 Corinthians chapters 12 & 13 where God told us that we are all parts of one body and then told us how to love.
I write this post in tears because the church, the body, the people of God are giving more power to our differences than our commonality: JESUS CHRIST IS LORD! Join me in the unity of the faith. Come together, assemble in the power of this truth. We don’t need to fuss over whose church is right or wrong. We don’t need to divide over who joined what movement or cause. We can all agree that JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!
We can do it! We can agree! We can show love! We can unite! We can do all of this without compromise, without acquiescence, without arguing, and without bending our beliefs.
“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” – Psalm 133: 1 NIV
I am not a biblical scholar, a five-fold minister, or theologian. I don’t have any fancy titles or positions. I am just a Christian with a broken heart looking for God’s people to come together. No matter what church you belong to or who your favorite preacher is. Let us come back to our foundational agreement: JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!!! It will reset us and then we can go on together from there.
I love you, brothers and sisters. I pray for us all.
